TRC20 vs ERC20: Key Differences for USDT Transfers

When sending or receiving USDT, you'll often be asked to choose between TRC20 and ERC20. This choice determines which blockchain your transaction travels on, and it has significant implications for speed and cost.

What Is TRC20?

TRC20 is the token standard on the TRON blockchain. USDT TRC20 transactions are processed at speeds of thousands per second with fees that rarely exceed $1. TRON currently handles the largest share of stablecoin volume globally, capturing nearly 35% of the total stablecoin market cap.

What Is ERC20?

ERC20 is the token standard on the Ethereum blockchain. While Ethereum has a vast DeFi ecosystem, its transaction fees (gas fees) can range from a few dollars to over $50 during periods of network congestion—making small USDT transfers impractical.

Speed Comparison

TRC20 transactions confirm in 3–5 seconds. ERC20 transactions on Ethereum can take anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes depending on network load.

Fee Comparison

TRC20 fees: typically less than $1. ERC20 fees: $5–$50+ depending on gas prices. For high-frequency transfers or small amounts, TRC20 is the clear winner on cost.

When to Use ERC20

Use ERC20 when the recipient's exchange or wallet only supports the Ethereum network, or when you're interacting with Ethereum-based DeFi protocols that require ERC20 USDT.

Key Warning

Never send TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address, or ERC20 USDT to a TRC20 address. The two networks are incompatible and funds sent to the wrong network address type will be permanently lost.
